Today marks the second day of my dialysis treatment. As I was curious about what was going on in the dialysis machine, I asked a nurse for information. She told me that firstly, blood is drawn from an artery in my arm and is pumped through the tubing in the dialysis machine. The partially permeable tubing in the machine is bathed in a specially controlled dialysis fluid. Substances such as urea and metabolic waste products diffuse out of the tubing into the dialysis fluid. The filtered blood is then returned to a vein in my arm.
